"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not."
- 1 John 3:1
WORD OF THE WEEK
The Greeks, in the New Testament, were very precise with their language, more so than our culture is today. John was known as the Apostle of Love.
One of the words of love was Storge, which means family love; the way you love your mother or father. Eros which means sexual love, or marriage love.
Phileo which translates to brotherly love, and Agape which means unconditional love; where you love but don’t expect anything back in return.
Agape isn’t “I love you if..” or “I love you because..” It’s an “I love you anyhow” kind of love. That’s the kind of love God gave for you and I, unconditional love!
Even in your worst of the worst, after you’ve backslidden, or mishandled the trial, or lost faith, God still loves you. The enemy wants to come in and make you feel like an unwanted, unloved failure.
In this verse John is saying that our God’s love is not performance oriented!
Our God’s love isn’t based on how well you perform with the Bible or in church. John said, “What manner of love the Father has given that we should be called the sons..”
Do you get mad at your sons? Yes. Do you disown them? No! Because there is something inside of you that takes over and says they are "bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh.”
Do you know what God says about us? "We are spirit of His spirit.” And the love He has for you is an everlasting love; it’s an unconditional love. All the grace that He has is not because you do this or don’t do that.
God just loves you anyhow! We aren't used to that kind of love. This whole world is based on conditional love and performance.
We don’t fully grasp that the love of Jesus is solely based on, “I love you.” His love is radical and it’s different!
It can be an adjustment to get used to that, but make that a goal this year to acknowledge that you want the love God has for you!
It will deliver you!
It will help you endure and overcome in so many situations, and reduce your expectations on other people.
You’ll know that maybe you can’t measure up to their standards, but you already have the seal of approval from the Master on high!
